Objective: Given that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is thought to be one of the ever-increasing and destructive disorders in adolescents, it seems critical to consider the model in which the predictors of OCD are examined. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the relationship between childhood fears and brain-behavioral systems with OCD in adolescents through the mediating role intolerance of uncertainty.
Methods: This research was correlational, of path analysis type. The statistical population included all male and female secondary school students living in Kouhdasht, Iran, in the academic year of 2021-2022, among whom 441 participants were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling. Applied to collect data were Muris et al.’s fear survey schedule for children, Carver and white’s behavioral inhibition/activation systems scale (BIS/BAS), Foa et al.s OCD-revised scale (OCD-R), and Buhr and Dugas’s intolerance of uncertainty scale (IUS). Data were analyzed using path analysis in SPSS-24 and Amos-8.8 software.
Results: Results figured out that there are significant paths between childhood fears (β=0.31), BIS (β=0.63) and BAS (β=0.14) with intolerance of uncertainty. Although there was a significant path between childhood fears and OCD, there was no significant paths between BIS and BAS with OCD. Besides, there was a significant path between intolerance of uncertainty and OCD (β=0.64). Finally, intolerance of uncertainty was found to mediate the relationship of childhood fears, BIS and BAS with OCD.
Conclusions: The above-mentioned results may provide psychotherapists and counselors working in this field of inquiry with advantageous information to choose a useful intervention in the therapeutic process of adolescence with OCD.
