<abstract>
Objective: Marital satisfaction is a multidimensional construct encompassing satisfaction with marital interactions and with the emotional and practical aspects of marriage. This study investigated the effectiveness of sensory processing training in improving marital satisfaction among couples experiencing marital conflict.
Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group was used. The statistical population comprised couples referred to family counseling centers in Kerman in 2023, from which 60 participants were purposively selected and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). Data were collected using the ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale (1989). The experimental group completed a 10-session sensory processing training program designed to address sensory sensitivities and improve emotional regulation and communication; the control group received no intervention. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) in SPSS version 27.
Results: ANCOVA showed a significant effect of sensory processing training on marital satisfaction, F = 57.522, p < .001, η² = 0.502, with the intervention accounting for 50.2% of the variance in marital satisfaction scores. The experimental group showed significantly greater improvement than the control group.
Conclusions: Sensory processing training appears to be an effective intervention for improving marital adjustment by addressing sensory sensitivities and enhancing emotional regulation and interpersonal communication. These findings suggest that sensory interventions may complement existing therapeutic approaches for marital conflict. Further research is recommended to examine the long-term effects and applicability of this training across different populations and cultural contexts.
</abstract>
